As the Conservative Party gathers for its spring conference in Manchester, the mood is less one of renewal than of existential reckoning. Eighteen months after their historic electoral defeat, the Tories remain divided on fundamental questions of identity, ideology, and strategy.

The leadership of Kemi Badenoch, initially welcomed as a generational reset, has failed to arrest the party's decline in the polls. At 22 per cent, the Conservatives sit behind both Labour and Reform UK — a configuration that would have been unthinkable a decade ago.

"We are fighting a two-front war," conceded one shadow cabinet minister. "We're losing traditional voters to Reform on immigration and cultural issues, while losing educated professionals to Labour and the Liberal Democrats on the economy and public services."

The party's strategic dilemma is compounded by demographic shifts. Analysis by the British Election Study shows that the Conservatives have lost their lead among over-65s for the first time since records began, while their support among under-40s has collapsed to single digits in several urban constituencies.

Senior figures privately acknowledge that the party may need to accept a prolonged period in opposition — potentially spanning two or three electoral cycles — before it can rebuild a viable coalition. The question is whether it can survive that long without fracturing entirely.
