The creation of the AI Ethics Board, a body designed to oversee the ethical deployment of AI across industries, positions the UK as a global leader in AI governance. But behind this pioneering initiative lies a complex web of challenges, ambitions, and questions about the future of international technology standards.
The AI Ethics Board, established in 2024, operates under the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation. Its mandate is to provide strategic advice on the ethical implications of AI, from facial recognition in policing to autonomous decision-making in healthcare. Unlike the European Union’s AI Act, which relies on a risk-based legislative framework, the UK’s approach is more flexible, emphasizing principles over prescriptive rules.
