Jaguar Land Rover has officially opened its £3 billion electric vehicle gigafactory in Coventry, the largest single investment in Britain's automotive sector in over a decade and a critical milestone in the country's industrial transition.
The facility, which will produce battery packs and assemble electric models for both Jaguar and Land Rover brands, has the capacity to build 300,000 vehicles annually. It will directly employ 5,000 workers, with an estimated 15,000 additional jobs created in the supply chain.
"This is a statement of confidence in British manufacturing," said the JLR CEO. "We are building the electric future right here, in the heartland of British automotive excellence."
The government contributed £500 million in subsidies and infrastructure investment to secure the project, which had also been courted by Spain and Slovakia. The first vehicles are expected to roll off the production line in early 2027.
