A heated debate over the UK's first-past-the-post voting system has reached the floor of the House of Commons after a public petition calling for proportional representation surpassed one million signatures.

Backbenchers from across the political spectrum have joined calls for a Royal Commission to investigate alternative voting systems, arguing that the current model leaves millions of voters feeling unrepresented.

"The disconnect between votes cast and seats won has reached a breaking point," stated the lead petitioner. "Our democracy needs an upgrade for the 2100s."
