A heated debate over the UK's first-past-the-post voting system has reached the floor of the House of Commons after a public petition calling for proportional representation surpassed one million signatures.
Backbenchers from across the political spectrum have joined calls for a Royal Commission to investigate alternative voting systems, arguing that the current model leaves millions of voters feeling unrepresented.
"The disconnect between votes cast and seats won has reached a breaking point," stated the lead petitioner. "Our democracy needs an upgrade for the 2100s."
The government has so far resisted the calls, maintaining that the current system provides stable, decisive leadership and preserves the vital link between MPs and their local constituencies.
